How to make Ayurvedic Smoothies

“We are what we digest.”

- Sushruta Samhita

Combining raw fruit with other foods is not the best for your digestion. From an ayurvedic perspective, raw fruit and veggies are quite hard to digest, especially when it is cold outside and your body needs warming, grounding, seasonal food.

Smoothies contain amazing nutrients, that our body just not always can absorb. That is why we usually sauté food in Ayurveda, yes even fruit.

Ice cream, ice cold drinks, frozen fruit & in general don’t contain any prana and dampen digestion (agni), they weaken your system for the rest of the day. Adding protein powder as well makes it worse, because our bodies cannot recognize it as food.

Leaving out smoothies, especially during colder months, might make you feel better: You will stop feeling unreasonably cold, no more gas or erratic digestive patterns. Vata is calmed, Agni becomes much stronger and your immunity as well!

You can drink smoothies, you just need to know which foods are well to combine, leave out protein powder and ice. The good thing about Ayurveda is, there is not a general NO, you just need to find out tricks how to make it work. If you watch your current state, the seasons and know some tricks, everything in moderation is okay, of course it is different if you have a severe imbalance.

If I want to enjoy a smoothie, I leave out any crunchy or dry toppings as it will aggravate my Vata and make them at room temperature, with fresh seasonal (sometimes steamed) 60% augmenting and 40% extractive fruit, fruit, and warming spices (cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves etc). Enjoying them during midday on hot summer days, as digestive fire is highest then also assists Agni.

Thriving with the seasons, here during my last trip to Mexico, when it was really hot outside. This is a mixed smoothie bowl with some sprouted seeds on top to add in something extractive, although just fruit would have been better for my Agni. I am not perfect either, but who is, being perfectly imperfect is better than not trying, right?

Hope this inspired you to make an Ayurvedic smoothie at home!
